An old man, nearing death, decides to divide his herd of 17 camels between his three sons. The elder one will inherit half the herd, the next one a third and the youngest one ninth. Confronted with the indivisibility of 17 by 2, 3 and 9, the three brothers consult the village elder. He, being a fine mathematician, proposes a solution that, without having recourse to a butcher, respects the will of the old man.

What is the solution?
